V Festival in Perth
My last big trip during my exchange took me to Perth, where I spent the weekend and most of this monday. On the flight there, I read Bringing down the house , a book on a real team of MIT students beating the Las Vegas casinos by counting black jack cards. I normally don't read much, but almost finished the 300 pages during the flight, which tells you both how long the flight is and how much I liked the book.
Perth started out rather disappointing: I paid far too much for the rental car, stayed in a hostel so bad that it could be located in London and it rained all through saturday morning, which I had planned to spend on the beaches.
It got a lot better when I met up with Chet , who I had contacted through couchsurfing.com , since we both had plans to go to the V Festival at the Esplanades the following day. Like me, Chet is a bit of a geek (though not of the Linux kind) and we had a good time together. In the afternoon, the sun came out, and I got my chance to explore the beautiful city.
Skyline of Perth
Sunday morning, I headed down to the beach, to have my first swim in the Indian Ocean, something I never got around to do during my trip to India. The Festival started at 13:00, with a very nice mix of bands. I particularly enjoyed Hot Hot Heat, the Rakes, Queens of the Stoneage and the Smashing Pumpkins, but was also positively surprised by Duran Duran and Modest Mouse, which were much better than I had expected.
The Rakes at V Festival
On my last day in Perth, I met Morgan, whose brother Evan is a friend of mine from Tübingen. Morgan went to a great effort to make sure I enjoyed my day. He took a day off work and told me many inside stories about Perth and in particular Kings Park, which his company had helped creating.

Zwischen meinen zwei grossen Ausflügen nach Alice Springs und Perth hatte ich endlich mal wieder ein ruhiges Wochenende in Canberra. Charlotte hatte zwar vorgehabt mich zu besuchen, aber sie brauchte dann etwas Recovery from their own trips, so I'll probably not see again can, because for me the season is here, too slowly to an end.
The weekend really took off with a nice tour of the local size " The Taken," which played before a small audience in the "Pot Belly".
The Taken
On Sunday, I went with Michael and Meg in the mountains around Canberra. We climbed a mountain, where there have been a few years ago a huge forest fire that has made it to the German news. The fascinating thing about the forest fires in Australia, how quickly the eucalyptus forest can regenerate here. Many of the trees are knocked out again from a completely blackened trunk, or have new offshoot formed, so that some already look exactly needs to recognize the damage. The adjacent coniferous forest on the other hand has completely disappeared.

the evening I finally put it once again managed in a church service in the strikingly good St Matthew's Angican Church where it has given me this time around well liked, with great music , a sermon appealing, exciting guests, and a very inviting atmosphere.
Another highlight of the week I was still in another concert, namely, the Black Crowes, who played in Canberra, and again in a half-filled room. Martin and Mel had bought two tickets too much and was glad he could still at least one of them to pass on to me. The band was expected, well, only they have played mainly new songs. Martin knew about a third of it, I knew only one song that was a little sad.

I Broke Out After A Brazilian Wax
Rain on Uluru
The main attraction for everyone coming to Alice Springs is of course a trip to Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock. We went on a three-day tour with a group of eighteen nice people. We spent
much of the time on the road, driving around 1500km in total. Our great tour guide and driver Scooter turned out to also be an excellent psychologist, geologist, DJ and chef, and he was accompanied by his sidekick Burger the Koala.
On the road with Burger
On the first day, we stopped at Kings Canyon for an extended walk and swim. Through its geological properties, the Canyon always has fresh water inside, even in year long droughts.
Walking in Kings Canyon
Later that day, we settled down to sleep under the stars around a campfire, but a short time after that, it started raining. After just a few hours I concluded that the rain was not going to stop and moved my swag under the roof where the others had already gone earlier.
The second day started with more rain, and we went to Uluru next, to see it in the waterfalls and walked all the way around it. It's impossible to describe what Uluru is like, you really have to see it yourself.
Uluru
Finally, we got to see Kata Tjuta, another spectacular rock formation, surprisingly close to Uluru. It had stopped raining when we got there, so we had a really nice walk there and went back to enjoy the sunset at Uluru.
Kata Tjuta
If you were there on the tour with me, please leave a comment and a pointer to your own photos if they are online.

Hermannsburg - Great Ocean Road
Over Easter I was a week in Alice Springs, with several trips to the environment. I was particularly pleased me on the day in Hermannsburg, a small Aboriginesiedlung, which was founded over 100 years by missionaries from the German Hermannsburg. Near the church there are still a muse to the story of the missionaries and their work there.
It would have a suitable place to be able to celebrate in peace Good Friday, but as our small group arrived there, has welcomed us only this sign:
Open every day, Christmas and Good Friday
Our Tour Guide knew about anything, because he had only come to help out, but at least we were able to stay for a few photos, and have the rest of the day spent in the beautiful Palm Valley, the only place for miles around, where there are ancient times even palm trees .
As always there to see more photos, click on the pictures here!
The next day Dorothy came from Sydney, and we are together on the Uluru-driven tour.
Alice Springs itself is a fascinating mix of stunning range of tourist attractions, with dozens of hostels and tour services, and the pervasive poverty of the local Aboriginal people. Since there is in the surrounding settlements strict alcohol ban, whose inhabitants come to Alice to get drunk there, and these people you see on the street.
In the supermarket, I have observed how the sale of glue to minors is regulated as glue and petrol (sniff) here the usual drugs are blown away with by the local brain.
Despite high unemployment and poverty among the Aboriginal people I have again heard from various white place, how easy it is to find work in Alice Springs and a separate existence from the ground up.

unfortunately closed again
On Sunday we put up three of the Great Ocean Road. We have only the first Section seen, but it was quite impressive:
on the Great Ocean Road
As has occurred in Germany at the time a late onset of winter, it is this week in Südvictoria just unusually hot for the season, and we were glad escape for a few hours at the beach to be cooled.
the evening, I went to Groggy and Yvonne where I was allowed to spend the Monday. It was this year's conference again not work out to visit them, so I was glad I was able to make up for it yet.
I could meet there by Satellitenverbindung meiner Arbeit nachgehen, ansonsten haben wir uns nicht nur über Betriebssystementwicklung unterhalten, ich habe auch viel von Groggys spannender Karriere und seinen Hobbies erfahren.

Milena Velba Molested
I've come down to Melbourne once more, to meet up with a few friends. Since I am apparently the only person on this planet that is not aware of the Formula 1 Grand Prix , I was caught by surprise finding out that every single Hostel and Hotel in my price range in greater Melbourne is full. Fortunately, the network of friends from Linux Australia worked really well for me, and I ended up staying with Pete , Donna and their two cats, and they even picked me up from the airport.
This morning, I went to the Queen Victoria Market, did a little shopping there, but mostly taking photos:

Merchandise at Queen Victoria Market
I met up with Ann for lunch, and we went to a restaurant in Chinatown, where she introduced me to some of the specialties that you do not normally get in a Chinese restaurant in Europe. We spent the afternoon at the Melbourne Museum, and later I got to introduce Australians to the Austrian pancakes for dinner.

Melbourne Canberra Day weekend
The last week was rich in experiences, so I've hardly found the time to stop and write down times. Given that the next two weeks like this continues, I will soon in all times but . Report
On Friday Doro came on a return visit to Canberra, and then together we have the National Gallery, the National Museum, Parliament and the Telstra Tower viewed. In the evening I had the opportunity to try out for the first time, Mikey's Barbeque, when we had a barbecue dinner.
Sunday we drove back to Sydney to meet with us to Charlotte. The two have me then in a concert of Hillsong Church taken, with 20,000 spectators in the Olympic Park, the music was fantastic, there were all new songs recorded at this event for the new CD.
My mood was dampened somewhat by the very strange for me Mixture of commercial and church. On the one hand, there was an official worship of the church, on the other hand, the musicians behave exactly as one would expect from any other rock concert.

Such was once again banned photography, with regard to copyright! Any other reason, I would have understood just does not want me in the head, which the Australians brings so much to misinterpret the copyright. was also previously in the National Gallery Copyright been cited as a reason that we took no pictures of paintings, even by those whose painters for centuries dead.
On Monday I had a day off because it was "Canberra Day" - one of the holidays, it is only in the capital. I then the way back from Sydney with some extended detours and I first moved along the beautiful coastline, to turn around at some point after a swim at a secluded Pacific beach on a Dirt Road in the direction of Canberra.
rightly considered, the hairs are from! summarize
of the rest of the week short: Tuesday lamb steak with Louise, Wednesday Karaoke in Kingston, Thursday visit to the Bartlett's (Andrew and Kirstie).
Tonight, it then goes on towards Melbourne, but it more when I get back.

From the blue mountains ...
am On Sunday I went with Dorothy and Charlotte from Sydney to the Blue Mountains. The weather forecast for Sydney predicted all day rain, so we took it calmly approach and are primarily driven by a steam train, with its unique design to the valley is down, for that is zigzag from a station next highest, while then after each short drive first coupled the locomotive on the other end of the train. Meanwhile, slowly the sun came out and still has shone all day.
the rest of the day we explored by car and on foot various view points and are on the trees und Bergen sattgesehen, am besten zeige ich einfach noch mehr Bilder...

Mardi Gras Parade
I went to Sydney again this weekend and had a chance to see the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras together with a few friends. Never having been to one of these before, I was surprised to see how much it is like the German Love Parade in Berlin or the Rosenmontag in Cologne (though I haven't been to those either), with the main exception that the people on the cars are not idiots but just homosexuals.
There was an extremely wide variety of groups, ranging from political activists to dance acts. There were local associations, political parties, religious and anti-religious groups, highschool kids, animal rights groups, Ikea employees, and of course beautiful dancers of both genders as well as many disgustingly ugly men.
A few people there seemed te be too much of a minority even there so they did not have there own cars, in particular I was missing
I took hundreds of photos, though most of them didn't work out well because it was hard to get a good view on the parade, but after throwing away most of them, I have a few gems left. Some photos may not be considered safe for work, so I'm not including them directly here. If you want to see them, please follow the link to my flickr page.

Batemans Bay Tourist
This weekend, I drove down to Batemans Bay, the closest beach town from Canberra. On the way there, I visited Rusty and Alli , who live in a nice barn in the middle of nowhere with their horses, cats and dogs.
Rusty showed me around his land and I ended up staying for dinner with them in the local pub.
I arrived late in Batemans Bay with almost no fuel left and the only backpackers having closed the reception for the night, but they let me stay anyway and thanks to my new TomTom I managed to find a fuel station in time, so everything worked out in the end.
On sunday, I found a few people at the hostel that were heading to a beach and I joined them there. We had a nice forest walk to a beach where I had my first chance to swim in the pacific ocean this year. The water was great and I had a lot of fun.
One of them had never seen wild kangaroos Despite having traveled through Australia for a few weeks already, so we stayed there for some more time until it had cooled down enough for them to come out, and we finally saw over thirty of them right at the beach.

Bridesmaid Dresses Under 60 Dollars
weekend away from home
The last weekend I spent with tourism in my adopted home of short-term Canberra. After I was bored in the last week in the evenings celebration but rather, I could now get them to do something.
I
the live music in the restaurants in Manuka and Civic have explored what a walk with Benh , Kirsty and Oliver and dinner and on Sunday was the first time in a tralischen worship. The Anglican church was recommended to me by Paul liked and gave me the same, I want to watch but also other communities.
After Dorothy has told me so much good about it, I've now registered with Couchsurfing to occasionally take with other residents and travelers with something. I have now found only two contacts with whom I plan to occasionally cook together, even in part to help not only the junk food We take on work to me. I'm sure there are many interesting encounters will result.
Regardless of yesterday I met Ann in Melbourne, which was the first time in Canberra and, therefore, just as I landed on a tour of the old parliament. We then spent the rest of the day together and have a look around Canberra. Ann is, raised in Melbourne, but originally came from Taiwan with her family and has spent the last years in different countries in Asia and America, we feel even more just as a tourist in your own country. We had to tell so much of the countries in which we have already.
the evening were we then on the Sony Tropfest , a short film festival, which was broadcast in all major cities of Australia 'and for free. The films were really good, and I can only recommend anyone looking at them on DVD or NineMSN online. My Favorites Ascension, Blues for the Soul and Scab have not been won, but the winners were also great.

Roads of Canberra
My orientation in Canberra is getting better, but I fear I will never learn to drive in the Circular Road here. There are very few roads that go in a straight line, so if you use your natural sense of direction, you end up going in a completely different way than you think.
I know a good way to work now that I can easily find, but when I want to go somewhere else, I always get lost, which is a waste of time and fossil fuel.
However, I hope that this will get better when I get the Tomtom 910 GPS navigation system I just bought on eBay. The device looks like the right solution to me, with the source code for its Linux operating system available from the Manufacturer's web site, a 20GB hard drive for maps and ogg music and wireless integration with the car stereo and GSM phone.
I'm sure there are a number of interesting ways to hack it to do even more interesting stuff.

Pityriasis Rosea After Shower
Apology Ceremony
I'm more or less fully back at work now, using Mikey 's Office, Home and Car while he's back in my home in Germany, but today was a special day.
Australia today witnessed a historic moment when prime minister Kevin Rudd made an official apology to the Stolen Generation of Indigenous Australians. This may seem insignificant to foreigners, but in my impression, the significance to the population can be compared to the Warschauer Kniefall of Willi Brandt on German politics.
Since Parliament Hill is close to my workplace in Canberra, I had the chance to see the celebration over there myself. They had set up large video screens outside of the parliament building for the hundreds of Indigenous and Nonindigenous people that had gathered there. The speech that Rudd gave was very moving indeed and he got standing ovations in both the Parliament and outside.
Unfortunately, the opposition leader somewhat spoiled this event by giving a stupid reply speech. I do not think the people were so much opposed to what he was saying as they were embarrassed by him, but almost all the people in the crowd outside ended up turning silently away from the video screen and looking in the opposite direction while he was speaking.

More from Tasmania
the last three days I spent in Tasmania in the South West National Park. On the ferry from Melbourne, I had already met Jorinde from Hamburg, and we went down together on Thursday in the remote corners.
Unfortunately it rained there more than elsewhere in Tasmania, so we cut off our full day hike had prematurely, but we still had a great trip.
On Saturday, we were again in a zoo and will have a good time waiting for the platypus that live there said. The platypus came out then no longer, but we have seen many other cute native animals.
the last three days I spent in Tasmania in the South West National Park. On the ferry from Melbourne, I had already met Jorinde from Hamburg, and we went down together on Thursday in the remote corners.

Apnea And Burning Feet
My LCA Miniconf presentation
I noticed that the video and audio of my presentation at linux.conf.au has been made available for download. I also uploaded the slides and paper to the usual location on userweb.kernel.org.
A number of people told me that they wanted to attend my talk at LCA, but were unaware of the reschedule from 11:30 to 9:15, and I guess there are more of you out there that would have seen it if they had the chance to attend the conference. Here is the complete set of material for anyone interested:
Video Audio Paper Slides
If you are using a MacOS or Windows based machine, you might have to download the Videolan Client , the Quicktime Components or the DirectShow filters for Windows in order to see the video.
